Amazon Just Opened Shop Direct to Any Eligible Store. What Should CPG Brands Do?
Amazon launched the free Shop Direct Merchant Workspace on Nov. 4, 2026. Here's what it means for CPG brands that sell on Amazon, DTC, or both.
On November 4, 2026 Amazon launched the Shop Direct Merchant Workspace, a free DIY portal where eligible merchants can connect their own web stores so products show up in Amazon search and Alexa for Shopping for U.S. customers, without selling in Amazon's store. Shoppers either leave Amazon for the merchant site or, when eligible, use Buy for Me so Amazon's agent completes the purchase on the merchant site. For CPG brands that already sell on Amazon, treat Shop Direct as a path for SKUs you keep off the marketplace. For brands that sell only on their own site or other retailers, it is a free discovery channel into Amazon demand, but Amazon has not published ranking, referral or conversion data, so join with clean feeds and measurement, not with big expectations yet.

- Products can appear in Amazon search and Alexa for Shopping for U.S. customers; shoppers leave Amazon or, when eligible, use Buy for Me.
- Merchants reuse existing catalogs via Feedonomics, Salsify, CEDCommerce, VersaFeed or SP-API; no fees, choose SKUs, opt out anytime.
- Amazon says Shop Direct products appear in hundreds of millions of searches monthly, but has not published click or order metrics for merchants.
- CPG brands should decide SKU by SKU: marketplace for Prime demand, Shop Direct for selection you will not (or cannot) sell in Amazon's store.

Amazon just made it a lot easier for brands that do not sell in its store to show up when a shopper searches on Amazon anyway.
On November 4, 2026, Amazon launched the Shop Direct Merchant Workspace: a free DIY portal for eligible merchants to connect their own websites to Shop Direct. Products can appear in Amazon search and inside Alexa for Shopping for U.S. customers. You keep the sale on your site. Amazon keeps the shopper from bouncing to Google.
If you run CPG on Amazon, DTC, or both, it changes how "Amazon demand" reaches you.
What did Amazon actually launch?
Shop Direct itself is not new. Amazon introduced it last year so shoppers could find products Amazon does not carry, clearly labeled Shop Direct. What changed this week is the on-ramp.
The Merchant Workspace lets an eligible merchant create an account, verify the business website and share a catalog. Amazon says you can reuse feeds you already maintain for other shopping destinations, and connect through Feedonomics, Salsify, CEDCommerce, VersaFeed, or Amazon's Selling Partner API.
Three commercial terms matter more than the product marketing: no fees to participate, you pick which SKUs to include, and you can opt out at any time. Inventory, pricing, fulfillment and customer support stay on your side. Amazon is promising discovery, not FBA-style delivery.
Amanda Doerr, vice president of Core Shopping at Amazon, put the strategy in one line: "Customers are increasingly trusting Amazon and Alexa for Shopping as the place to start any shopping journey—whether what they're looking for is in our store or somewhere else on the web."
That is the whole pitch. Amazon wants to be the start of the trip even when it is not the shelf.
How does a Shop Direct purchase actually work?
Two paths, both spelled out in Amazon's post.
First, the shopper taps Shop Direct on the product page. Amazon notifies them they are leaving Amazon, then sends them to your site to finish. You own the cart, the payment and the return.
Second, for eligible products, Buy for Me can run the purchase. The shopper confirms delivery address, taxes, shipping fees and payment on Amazon's interface. Amazon's AI then completes the order on your website. You still ship and support it.
Either way, the customer started on Amazon. For a snack, beauty or household brand that loses shoppers to Amazon search every day, that starting point is the point.
What numbers did Amazon give, and what did it leave out?
Amazon's scale claims are big and vague on purpose.
Since Shop Direct launched, "tens of millions of customers have discovered hundreds of millions of unique products from other stores," and Shop Direct products are "appearing in hundreds of millions of searches monthly." Those lines come straight from About Amazon. They measure exposure, not visits to your site and not orders.
PPC Land's write-up flags what merchants actually need and did not get: referral clicks, conversion rates, Buy for Me order volume, average order value, or how Shop Direct ranks against marketplace ASINs. Amazon also did not publish a current merchant or product count in the November 4 post.
So treat the launch as real distribution, not as a proven media channel. Join if the cost is near zero and your feed is clean. Do not reforecast Amazon revenue on "hundreds of millions of searches" alone.
Why does this matter more because of Alexa for Shopping?
Shop Direct is not just an Amazon.com search feature. Connected selection shows inside Alexa for Shopping, Amazon's agentic shopping assistant.
That assistant is no longer a side chat. Amazon merged Rufus into Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, and in its Q3 2026 earnings materials said more than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the prior 12 months, with customer interactions up 570% year over year. On the October 29 earnings call, Andy Jassy also said U.S. customers using the assistant spend 50% more per order than those who do not.
Shop Direct is how Amazon feeds that assistant products it does not stock. If your brand only lives on your site or at Target and Walmart, this is one of the few free routes into that demand.
How does this compare with Walmart's agent move?
It is the same fight from the other direction.
Walmart opened a front door for outside AI agents on October 21. Amazon has spent the past year limiting outside agents on its own store, while building Alexa for Shopping as the agent it wants customers to use.
Shop Direct fits that pattern. Amazon's agent can discover and, with Buy for Me, purchase from your site. Outside agents still do not get a clean path into Amazon's catalog. For CPG brands, the practical read is simple: on Walmart, prepare catalog data for many agents; on Amazon, prepare catalog data for Amazon's agent, including Shop Direct if you have selection outside the marketplace.
What should CPG brands do this week?
Not a strategy offsite. A SKU triage and a feed check.
List every SKU you sell on your own site that you do not (or will not) sell in Amazon's store: exclusives, larger packs, bundles, fragrance variants, club sizes. Decide which of those you are willing to show in Amazon search. Price and pack size must match what the shopper will see on your site, or Buy for Me and returns will punish you. If you already push a Google-style product feed through Feedonomics, Salsify, CEDCommerce or VersaFeed, ask that partner about Shop Direct before you build anything custom. If you already sell on Amazon, email shopdirect@amazon.com for off-Amazon selection instead of assuming the Workspace portal covers seller accounts. Add UTM or other referral tags on the Shop Direct landing path so you can see Amazon→site traffic in your own analytics. Amazon's Workspace, as described, shows active products, not a full referral report. Keep Amazon Ads on marketplace ASINs. Do not cut Sponsored Products because Shop Direct exists; Amazon has not said Shop Direct listings take sponsored placements.
The AI-ready listing checklist still applies. Titles, attributes, images and pack facts that are messy on your site will be messy in Shop Direct and in Alexa answers. Clean data is the unpaid work that makes a free channel usable.
Should brands that already sell on Amazon join?
Often yes, for the wrong catalog.
Many CPG brands keep some items off Amazon on purpose: MAP risk, multipacks that break retail relationships, limited drops, or DTC-only flavors. Shop Direct lets those items show up when someone searches the brand on Amazon without forcing a full Seller Central listing and Amazon fees on that SKU.
The risk is cannibalization. If a shopper finds your 12-pack on Shop Direct at a lower landed cost than your Amazon 6-pack, you just taught them to leave the marketplace. Price and pack architecture need a human look before you flip the feed on.
Also watch brand confusion. A Shop Direct result next to your FBA ASIN can look like a hijack to a hurried shopper, so make ownership obvious in the title and primary image.
What I would not do
I would not rebuild your Amazon P&L around Shop Direct this quarter. Amazon has not published the merchant-side economics.
I would not treat "no fees" as "no cost." Bad feeds create bad experiences on your site, and Buy for Me orders still hit your ops team.
I would not wait for a perfect policy memo. Eligibility criteria were not spelled out in the announcement, per PPC Land and Chain Store Age. Apply, verify the site, and see what Amazon accepts.
Amazon wants shopping missions to start on Amazon even when the carton ships from you. For CPG brands, that is either a free discovery channel for catalog you kept off Amazon, or noise next to ASINs you already defend. Choose SKU by SKU, with a measurable path back to your own site.
If you want a clear view of how your products show up across Amazon search, Alexa for Shopping and other AI assistants, SearchPanel and XENA 360 are where we usually start, and the customer stories show what that looked like for other brands.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Shop Direct Merchant Workspace?
It is Amazon's free DIY portal, launched November 4, 2026, where eligible merchants register for Shop Direct, verify their website, submit product feeds and see which products are active for Amazon customers. Connected products can show in Amazon search and Alexa for Shopping for U.S. shoppers.
Do I have to sell in Amazon's store to use Shop Direct?
No. Shop Direct is for products sold on the merchant's own site. Existing Amazon sellers can also join for selection they do not sell in Amazon's store by emailing shopdirect@amazon.com, per Amazon's announcement.
How do shoppers buy a Shop Direct product?
They tap Shop Direct on the product page, get a notice they are leaving Amazon, and finish on the merchant site. Eligible products may also offer Buy for Me, where the shopper confirms address, taxes, shipping and payment on Amazon and Amazon's AI completes the purchase on the merchant site.
What does it cost to join Shop Direct?
Amazon says there are no fees to participate, merchants keep inventory, pricing, fulfillment and customer service, choose which items to include and can opt out at any time. Feed or SP-API tool costs from third parties are separate from Amazon's participation fee, which Amazon says is zero.
Should a CPG brand move Amazon Ads budget because of Shop Direct?
Not yet. Amazon has not said whether Shop Direct listings can use Sponsored Products or how they rank next to marketplace ASINs. Keep ads on the listings you sell in Amazon's store, and treat Shop Direct as a discovery and referral channel until Amazon publishes measurement.
