Amazon Rufus
Amazon Rufus is Amazon's generative AI shopping assistant. Amazon introduced it in beta on February 1, 2024, describing an assistant that answers shopping questions in the Amazon app using Amazon's product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&A and information from across the web. In 2026 Amazon combined Rufus with Alexa+ as Alexa for Shopping.
Why it matters for CPG brands
Rufus answers questions inside the store where the purchase happens. Amazon says Rufus helped more than 300 million customers in 2025. Because its answers draw on listings, reviews and Q&A, the completeness of a product's detail page and what reviewers say both shape whether it gets recommended.
Example
A shopper types “what do I need for a kid's first camping trip?” into the Amazon search bar. The assistant suggests categories and specific products. A first-aid kit whose listing clearly states who it's for, what's inside and how it compares has more material to be recommended from than one with a bare bullet list.
