Answer engine optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a brand and its products easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and recommend, so that when a shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Amazon's shopping assistant what to buy, the product is named inside the answer instead of sitting in a list of links.
Why it matters for CPG brands
An AI answer usually names only a handful of products. If yours isn't one of them, the shopper may never see it. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond the SEO basics, so crawlable pages and clear, accurate product information are the foundation. OpenAI says ChatGPT's product results are chosen independently and aren't ads, which means you can't buy your way into the answer; the product information has to do the work.
Example
A dairy-free dip brand asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Rufus “what's the best vegan queso for a party?” and finds it isn't named. Its listing never says “dairy-free” in plain words and has no serving ideas. The brand adds both, fixes its Product structured data, publishes a comparison guide, and re-checks the same question every week.

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap. SEO aims to rank pages; AEO aims to get a product named and correctly described inside an AI answer. Google says its AI features use the same foundations as Search, so good SEO is the starting point.
