SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What's the Difference, and Which Should Your Brand Prioritize?
SEO, AEO and GEO compared side by side: what each term means, how Google AI Overviews fit in, and how ecommerce brands should split their effort between them.
SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are two names for the same goal: getting your brand named and described accurately in AI-generated answers. For ecommerce brands, SEO is the foundation and AEO/GEO is the layer on top, so you need both.
- AEO and GEO describe the same thing; the industry hasn't settled on one name.
- SEO wins clicks from a results page; AEO wins mentions inside an answer.
- Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same SEO foundations, with no special markup needed.
- Product brands need one more layer: complete, consistent product data across site, feeds and marketplaces.
- Measure them differently: rankings and clicks for SEO, mentions and recommendation rate per engine for AEO.

If you sell consumer products online, you've probably heard all three acronyms in the past year, often in the same meeting. Agencies pitch "GEO," platforms sell "AEO," and your SEO team wants to know whether their roadmap is still relevant. This guide cuts through it: what each term means, where they overlap, and how to split your effort.
What is SEO, and is it still relevant?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of helping search engines crawl, understand and rank your pages so people click through to them. Its unit of success is a ranking URL, and the core metrics are impressions, rankings, clicks and conversions.
SEO is very much still relevant, and AI search depends on it. Google's own guidance on AI features is clear: to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements. If an engine can't crawl and understand your page, it can't cite it.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand and products named, recommended and described accurately when someone asks an AI system a question. For ecommerce, the "answer engines" include ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Amazon's shopping assistant (Rufus, now Alexa for Shopping).
The unit of success is a mention inside an answer, ideally as the recommendation, with the right facts attached. We cover the basics in What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is another name for the same goal: optimizing for AI-generated responses. You'll see GEO used more in academic and agency circles and AEO more in marketing and product circles. Some practitioners use GEO specifically for chat assistants and AEO for any answer surface, but the tactics overlap almost entirely.
How do SEO, AEO and GEO compare side by side?
| SEO | AEO / GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages, earn clicks | Be named and recommended in answers |
| Where | Search results pages | Chat assistants, AI Overviews and AI Mode, marketplace assistants |
| Query style | Keywords, often 2–4 words | Natural-language questions with constraints and context |
| What wins | Relevance, quality, links, page experience | All of SEO, plus complete product facts, clear differentiation and third-party credibility |
| Product data role | Helpful (rich results) | Central (feeds, attributes, specs, variants) |
| Primary metrics | Rankings, CTR, organic sessions | Mention rate, recommendation rate, share of voice, accuracy per engine |
| Volatility | Moderate | High; answers vary by engine, wording and session |
How do Google AI Overviews fit into this?
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit right where SEO and AEO meet. They are generated answers, but they live inside Google Search and draw on Google's index. Google's documentation makes several points brands should know:
- No special optimization is required. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema or AI text files.
- Query fan-out. AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response, which means they can surface a wider set of pages than a single query would.
- Same reporting. Traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type.
- Click quality. Google says that clicks from search results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with users more likely to spend more time on the site.
- Shopping data still matters. Google's best practices include keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date, and making sure structured data matches the visible text on the page.
So for Google, the AEO playbook mostly is the SEO playbook, done thoroughly. For engines outside Google, product data and third-party sources play a larger role.
Where should an ecommerce brand put its effort?
Think of it as three layers, each building on the one below.
Layer 1: Technical foundation (SEO and AEO). Crawlable pages, clean canonical URLs, fast pages, accurate structured data and a robots.txt that doesn't block the AI search crawlers you want to reach you. See robots.txt for AI crawlers.
Layer 2: Product truth (mostly AEO). Complete, consistent product facts everywhere a machine might read them: your product pages, your Merchant Center feed, Amazon, Walmart and other marketplaces. Titles, attributes, ingredients or materials, sizes, variants, GTINs, images, return policy. The AI-ready listing checklist covers this in detail.
Layer 3: Answers and credibility (both). People-first content that answers real buyer questions, plus reviews and third-party coverage. Google's helpful content guidance emphasizes experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, and says trust is the most important of these.
- Audit crawlability and indexing for your top product and category pages.
- Confirm AI search crawlers (such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot) aren't blocked.
- Reconcile product facts across site, feed and marketplaces for your best sellers.
- Map the buyer questions in your category and check who wins them in each engine.
- Publish clear, specific answers on crawlable pages for the questions you're losing.
- Track SEO and AEO metrics separately, but review them together.
How should you measure each one?
Keep your SEO reporting: Search Console, rankings, organic sessions and revenue. Add an AEO layer that answers different questions:
- For a defined set of buyer prompts, how often is each product mentioned, per engine?
- When it's mentioned, is it recommended or just listed?
- Is the description accurate: price, size, key claims?
- Who wins when you don't, and what sources are cited?
How to Measure AI Visibility walks through a weekly tracking setup. XENA's SearchPanel does this per SKU, giving each product a 0–100 AI Visibility Score broken down by engine.
Which should you prioritize?
If your foundation is weak, start there; it lifts SEO and AEO at the same time. If your foundation is solid, the fastest gains usually come from product truth and measurement: finding the specific prompts where competitors are named instead of you, and fixing the missing facts behind them.
The terminology will keep shifting. The job won't: make your products the easiest, most trustworthy answer to the questions your buyers ask.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO different from AEO?
In practice, no. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) both describe optimizing to appear in AI-generated answers. Some people use GEO for chat assistants and AEO for featured answers, but the tactics overlap almost completely.
Do I need special schema for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements and no special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard SEO best practices and structured data that matches your visible content still apply.
Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No. AI search features still rely on crawled, indexed pages, and Google counts AI feature traffic in Search Console. SEO is changing, but it is still the foundation that AI visibility is built on.
Should I budget for SEO or AEO first?
If your site isn't crawlable or your product data is incomplete, fix that first; it helps both. Then add AEO measurement so you can see where AI answers leave you out, and prioritize those gaps.
