What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Plain-English Guide for CPG Brands

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is how brands get named in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Amazon's AI assistant. Here is what it is, how it works and where to start.

TL;DR

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand and products easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and recommend, so that when a shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Amazon's assistant what to buy, your product is part of the answer.

  • AEO is about being named and correctly described inside an AI-generated answer, not only ranking a link.
  • AI shopping answers draw on product data, your website, reviews and third-party sources, so all of them matter.
  • Classic SEO is still the foundation: Google says its AI features rely on the same indexing and quality systems.
  • Measure AEO per product and per engine, because each assistant answers differently.
  • Start with your best sellers: fix product data, answer real buyer questions and track the result weekly.

Shoppers used to type a few keywords, scan ten blue links and open five tabs. Now many of them simply ask: "What's the best electrolyte powder without added sugar?" or "Which burn kit should I keep in a restaurant kitchen?" An AI assistant reads the web, product catalogs and reviews, and replies with a short list of products and a reason for each.

If your product is on that list, you're in the running. If it isn't, the shopper may never know you exist. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the discipline of making sure you are on that list, described correctly, for the questions your buyers actually ask.

What does "answer engine" actually mean?

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer rather than just a list of links. For consumer brands, the ones that matter today include:

  • ChatGPT (including its shopping results)
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus Gemini
  • Perplexity
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • Claude
  • Amazon's shopping assistant, launched as Rufus and renamed Alexa for Shopping in May 2026

These systems differ in where they get information and how they choose what to show. But they share one behavior that changes the game for brands: they compress the shelf. Instead of a page of results, the shopper sees a handful of named products. Being "on page one" is no longer enough. You need to be in the answer.

How do AI assistants decide which products to recommend?

Each engine has its own system, but their public documentation points to the same kinds of inputs.

Structured product data. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT's product results draw on structured metadata from third-party providers and merchants, such as price and product descriptions, together with reviews and the context of the conversation. Merchants can also share product feeds directly.

Your website. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. In other words, AI search features use the same foundations as regular Search.

Marketplace catalogs and reviews. Amazon describes its assistant as answering from its product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&A and information from across the web. Amazon says the assistant helped over 300 million customers in 2025.

Third-party mentions. Reviews, comparisons, forums and retailer pages all help an engine judge whether your product fits a question. If credible sources describe your product clearly, the engine has more to work with.

What's the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO asks, "Will my page rank for this keyword?" AEO asks, "When a shopper asks this question, will the AI name my product, and will it describe it accurately?"

SEO AEO
Unit of success A ranking URL A mention or recommendation inside an answer
Typical query Short keywords Full questions with constraints ("under $30", "vegan", "for kids")
Where it happens Search results pages Chat assistants, AI Overviews, marketplace assistants
What you measure Rankings, clicks, CTR Mentions, recommendation rate, accuracy, share of voice per engine
Foundation Crawlable, helpful pages All of SEO, plus complete product data and answers to buyer questions

We go deeper on this in SEO vs AEO vs GEO. The short version: AEO doesn't replace SEO, it builds on it. Google states plainly that the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and that you don't need special optimization to appear in them.

What makes a product "answerable"?

Think about the questions that come up before a purchase in your category, then ask whether a machine could answer each one from your information alone.

  • Who is it for? Age, skill level, diet, lifestyle, use case.
  • What exactly is it? Size, count, materials, ingredients, certifications, compatibility.
  • How does it compare? What makes it different from the obvious alternatives?
  • Is it trustworthy? Reviews, return policy, shipping, a real brand behind it.
  • Is it available? Price, stock and variants that match what's actually for sale.

If those answers are buried in images, scattered across pages, or inconsistent between your site and your marketplace listings, an AI engine has to guess. Engines tend to recommend products they can describe with confidence.

“AI recommendations have always been a black box. XENA makes them measurable giving each product a clear visibility score based on real buyer-style queries across every major AI engines.”

From XENA SearchPanel

How do you measure AEO?

You can't manage what you can't see, and AI visibility is hard to see. Answers change by engine, by wording and over time. A useful measurement setup has four parts:

  1. A prompt set that reflects real buyer questions: category searches, comparisons, attribute filters ("gluten-free"), occasions ("gift for a runner") and problem framing ("my office is always cold").
  2. Per-engine tracking, because ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Amazon's assistant can give very different answers.
  3. Per-SKU scoring, because a brand-level number hides the products that are invisible.
  4. Week-over-week history, so you can connect a fix to a change.

XENA's SearchPanel gives each product a 0–100 AI Visibility Score with published bands: 0–39 Critical, 40–64 Developing, 65–79 Competitive and 80–100 Dominant. For a full measurement playbook, read How to Measure AI Visibility.

Where should a CPG brand start with AEO?

Don't try to fix the whole catalog at once. Start where the revenue is.

  • Pick your top 10–20 SKUs by revenue or margin.
  • Write down 20–30 real buyer questions for each category (use reviews, customer service tickets and search terms).
  • Check what each major engine says today for those questions. Note who is named and why.
  • Fix product data first: titles, attributes, specs, variants, GTINs and images (see the AI-ready listing checklist).
  • Make sure AI search crawlers can reach your site (see robots.txt for AI crawlers).
  • Publish clear answers to the buyer questions you're losing, on pages engines can crawl.
  • Re-check weekly, and keep a log of what you changed and when.

If you want a structured version of this, our 90-day AEO plan breaks it into weekly sprints.

What results can AEO deliver?

Results depend on category, competition and starting point, so be wary of anyone who guarantees a number. For reference, XENA publishes its own platform averages on searchpanel.ai: a 5× average lift in AI visibility within the first 90 days and +32% higher conversion on AI referral traffic. Customer stories are on the SearchPanel brands page. Treat these as XENA-reported figures, not industry benchmarks.

The bottom line

AEO is the next layer of product discovery. The brands that win will treat AI answers as a channel: they'll measure it per product, give engines complete and consistent information, and fix gaps systematically. Start with one question: when a shopper asks an AI what to buy in your category, what does it say about you today?

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap heavily. SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AEO aims to get your brand named and accurately described inside AI-generated answers. Good SEO, especially crawlable pages, clear content and accurate structured data, is the foundation AEO builds on.

Which answer engines matter most for CPG brands?

For most consumer brands the important ones are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Amazon's shopping assistant (Rufus, now called Alexa for Shopping). Which one matters most depends on where your buyers shop.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

OpenAI states that ChatGPT's product results are selected independently and are not ads. Visibility comes from clear, accurate, widely available product information rather than a placement fee.

How long does AEO take to show results?

It varies by engine and category. Crawlers have to revisit your pages, and some engines refresh faster than others. Track results weekly per product so you can see which changes moved the needle.
