How Does ChatGPT Choose Which Products to Recommend? A Guide for Brands

What OpenAI says about how ChatGPT selects shopping results, how merchants are ranked, and seven practical steps to make your products easier for ChatGPT to recommend.

TL;DR

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT shows a product when it judges it relevant to the shopper's intent. It weighs the query and conversation context against structured product metadata from merchants and third-party providers (such as price and description), other third-party content like reviews, and its safety policies. Product results are not ads. To be recommended more often, make your product data complete and consistent, keep your site crawlable by OAI-SearchBot, and earn credible third-party coverage.

  • ChatGPT's product results are selected independently and are not ads, according to OpenAI.
  • It relies on structured product metadata from merchants and third-party providers, plus other third-party content such as reviews.
  • The shopper's constraints (budget, use case, dislikes) change which product facts matter most.
  • When several merchants sell the same item, OpenAI says it ranks them by factors like availability, price, quality and whether they are the maker.
  • Shopify product data already flows into ChatGPT via Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for a direct product feed.

When a shopper asks ChatGPT for "a carry-on backpack that fits under an airline seat" or "a gentle sunscreen for kids with eczema," ChatGPT can respond with a product carousel: images, details and links to buy. For some products it may even offer Instant Checkout inside the chat.

That's a new shelf, and most brands have no idea whether they're on it. The good news is that OpenAI has published a fair amount about how that shelf is stocked. This guide summarizes what OpenAI actually says, then turns it into a practical checklist.

What does OpenAI say about how product results are chosen?

OpenAI's help article on shopping with ChatGPT search is the primary source here. The key points:

  • Relevance to intent. A product appears in the carousel when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to the shopper's intent. It considers the query plus context, such as Memory or Custom instructions.
  • Structured metadata. ChatGPT considers structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, for example price and product description, and other third-party content.
  • Constraints shift the weighting. If the shopper gives a $30 budget, ChatGPT focuses more on price. If price isn't mentioned, it may weigh other aspects, such as reviews or ease of use.
  • Not ads. Product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by OpenAI partnerships. Ads are separate.
  • Not everything is shown. Not all available products will necessarily appear.

Does ChatGPT rewrite my product titles and descriptions?

It can. OpenAI says ChatGPT may generate simplified product titles and descriptions from third-party provider information, because merchants often use different titles for the same item. It can also add labels such as "Budget-friendly" or "Most popular" and show review summaries generated from reviews on public websites.

That has two implications for brands:

  1. Inconsistent data creates confusion. If your Amazon title, Shopify title and retailer titles describe the product differently, the simplified version may lose the detail that matters most.
  2. Your reviews speak for you. Review summaries highlight common likes and dislikes. Recurring complaints about sizing or taste will show up. Fixing the underlying product or listing issue is part of AEO.

How does ChatGPT rank merchants selling the same product?

When a shopper selects a product, ChatGPT may show a list of merchants offering it. OpenAI says merchants are ranked on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item. Prices in the first response usually reflect the first merchant listed, and ChatGPT works to highlight the lowest price it knows about.

For brands that sell direct and through retailers or marketplaces, this is a reason to make your own store a clean, authoritative source: accurate stock, current pricing and clear signals that you're the maker.

How do I get my products into ChatGPT shopping results?

There's no submission form that guarantees placement, but there are clear levers. Here are seven steps, in the order we'd tackle them.

1. Check how your product data flows in

OpenAI says that for Shopify merchants, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no extra work needed. Merchants who want ChatGPT to always reflect up-to-date product information can read OpenAI's Product Feed documentation and apply for direct feed access. Know which path applies to you, and audit the data going through it.

2. Make your structured data complete

Price and description are named explicitly, but think wider: brand, GTIN, size, color, material, ingredients, count, variant relationships, availability and shipping. Google's Merchant Center product data specification is a good model for which attributes to fill, even outside Google. Our AI-ready listing checklist has the full list.

3. Allow OAI-SearchBot

OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt if you want your site to appear in search results. GPTBot, used for training, is controlled separately. OpenAI notes robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect. See robots.txt for AI crawlers for a template.

4. Write for the questions shoppers actually ask

Shoppers give constraints: budget, age, diet, skin type, room size, occasion. If your product page doesn't state the fact that satisfies the constraint, in text a machine can read, you can't win that answer. Put key specs in text rather than only in images, and answer common questions directly on the page.

5. Keep prices and stock in sync everywhere

OpenAI notes that pricing and shipping updates can take time to appear. Avoid giving engines conflicting signals: a sale price on your site but not in your feed, or an out-of-stock variant still listed as available.

6. Earn credible third-party coverage

ChatGPT considers third-party content. Independent reviews, retailer listings, comparisons and press help the model describe your product, and they show it you're a real, trusted option.

7. Track it per product, per prompt

The only way to know whether any of this works is to ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, consistently, and record the results. See How to Measure AI Visibility.

  • Confirm whether your data reaches ChatGPT via Shopify Catalog, a direct feed, or third-party providers.
  • Fill every relevant product attribute, not just title, price and description.
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN or firewall.
  • Put key specs and use cases in crawlable text on product pages.
  • Reconcile price, stock and variants across site, feeds and marketplaces.
  • Address recurring review complaints at the source.
  • Track a fixed prompt set in ChatGPT every week.

What does "good" look like?

A well-optimized product is one ChatGPT can describe correctly in a sentence: what it is, who it's for, what makes it different and what it costs. If you ask ChatGPT about your own product and the answer is vague, out of date or wrong, that's your starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to get my product recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in product results. OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads or influenced by OpenAI partnerships. Ads in ChatGPT are shown separately from product results.

Do Shopify brands need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT shopping?

OpenAI says product data for Shopify merchants is already integrated through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required. You still control the quality of that data, so complete titles, descriptions, variants and attributes matter.

Which crawler should I allow for ChatGPT search?

OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. Allow it in robots.txt if you want your pages to be eligible. GPTBot is a separate crawler used for model training and can be controlled independently.

Why does ChatGPT show the wrong price for my product?

OpenAI notes that prices come from third-party providers and that updates to pricing or shipping can take time to appear. Keep feeds and structured data current, and report errors through ChatGPT's feedback tools.
